International Society for Heart Research (ISHR)
The Society was founded in 1968 in Dubrovnik, as the International Study Group for Research in Cardiac Metabolism. It adopted the name International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) in 1976 in Tokyo. The Society now has over 3,000 members worldwide, divided between eight geographical sections - Australasian, Chinese, C.I.S., European, Indian, Japanese, Latin American and North American. Membership is open to anyone engaged in basic or clinical cardiovascular research or teaching. The Society is the only truly international organisation supporting and promoting the interests of cardiovascular research scientists in every part of the world. Thus all section members become part of the ISHR’s larger world organisation.

Goals and Objectives of the ISHR
- To promote the exchange of ideas on a world-wide basis between scientists and clinicians interested in all aspects of cardiovascular biology and medicine.
- To promote the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in all areas of cardiovascular biology and medicine.
- To organize and support national and international congresses devoted to all aspect of cardiovascular research.
- To provide an international forum for discussion of problems and controversies at the cutting edge of cardiovascular research.
- To publish a world class journal devoted to advances in cardiovascular research.

- the Janice Pfeffer Distinguished Lecture
- the ISHR European Section Medal of Merit
- the ISHR European Section Servier Research Fellowship
Fellowship of the ISHR (designated by the postnominal letters FISHR) was established recently (2001). A panel of foundation Fellows was selected solely on the basis of scientific excellence, as evidenced by an established track record of publications in high-impact journals. The main criterion in assigning Fellowship status was the performance of independent research that has made a major contribution to advancing our understanding of cardiovascular biology and medicine. In future years the panel of fellows will be selected from those members of the Society who have made distinguished contributions to cardiovascular science and will not exceed 5% of the total membership.
Publications
The ISHR publishes its own internationally recognized journal (Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology; Editor: David Eisner, 12 issues per year). The Journal publishes on all aspects of cardiovascular science and with an impact factor of 5.246 is currently the 4th highest ranked journal in ISI's Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems category. http://www.elsevier.com
The ISHR also publishes a bulletin (Heart News and Views; Editor: Leslie Lobaugh, 3 issues per year). http://www.southalabama.edu/ishr/bulletin.htm
